Corbett Hits Campaign Trail Seeking 2nd Term

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) - About 150 supporters turned out at the Heinz History Center on Wednesday morning to welcome the man they hope will get another four years in office -- Tom Corbett.

And the governor summed up why he should be reelected.

"We made a promise, and I believe in keeping promises," Corbett told the crowd. "Our promises were contained in four words -- more jobs, less taxes. We kept that promise, and today we are adding one more line: promises kept."

Corbett itemized what he says are his many promises kept.

"We balanced the budgets without increasing your taxes. That's a promise kept," he said.

"We made state government the smallest it has been in over 50 years," he added. "Promise kept."

"We made the tough choices, and we put Pennsylvania's budget back on track. And today we are stronger for it," he said. "Promises kept."

But protesters outside the event had a different idea.

"One-term Tom. One-term Tom," they chanted.

"It's promises broken, not promises kept," declared Jim Burn, chair of the Pa. Democratic Party.

"This governor and the state party can show you, line by line, where he has said he would do one thing and has done another," said Burn. "You want to talk about education -- he's cut it. You want to talk about the special interests -- he has enabled them. You want to talk about students who don't have teachers. You want to talk about the inability to tax Marcellus Shale."

No surprise, as the campaign unfolds, Corbett's record will be debated.

After the event, KDKA political editor Jon Delano asked the governor about his plans for a second term.

Delano: "Are there any new promises for the next four years?"

Corbett: "Well, we still have more work to do on what we promised before. We continue to do it. The number one promise -- we got to continue growing the economy of Pennsylvania, and that's exactly what we're doing."
