More Snow To Blanket The Area Tuesday
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) - Ready or not, here comes more snow.
Pennsylvanians are getting ready to shovel snow from a modest storm early Tuesday, about a day after an icy mix delivered the first punch, closing schools and causing headaches for morning commuters.
The second round of snow is expected to fall overnight into Tuesday morning.
Before it ends, forecasters expect 1-3 inches in the Pittsburgh area.
Forecasters are expecting around three to five inches in southeastern Pennsylvania including Philadelphia, and one to three inches in and around Harrisburg. Farther west in the State College region, around one to two inches of snow are expected.
"This next wave that's coming up from the Deep South will be able to produce all snow," said meteorologist Barry Lambert, who works for the National Weather Service in State College. "It should be a fluffier snow, too."
Lambert said the heaviest snow is expected in late morning and the front should be through Pennsylvania by early to mid-afternoon.
PennDOT's emergency operations center ramped up Monday evening. The department has 5,400 operators and 2,250 trucks available for snow removal plus a smaller fleet of contractors.
"This event looks like mostly snow, so it will be a bit more straightforward hopefully," said Erin Waters-Trasatt at PennDOT headquarters in Harrisburg. "Because when you have freezing rain moving in, it can be a challenge."
Daytime high temperatures are expected to remain more than 10 degrees below normal for this time of year, or below-freezing, so the white covering may be on the ground for the two weeks until Christmas.
"Right now the odds are probably favoring having some around" on the holiday, Lambert said. "As far as an actual fresh snow cover, it's still too far out."
The snow that fell Sunday was heaviest around Philadelphia, where some areas received 6 or 8 inches. State College reported only an inch or 2, with slightly more on the ground in Harrisburg and even more along the Maryland state line.
