Bouchette: More Energy Around the Steelers Rookies This Year
PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- The Steelers wrapped up their rookie mini-camp Sunday at their South Side practice facility. The Fan Steelers Insider Ed Bouchette, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, told Tab Douglas and Stacy Kauffman that there's an energy with this year's group.
"For the first time, I think there's more energy around this group of rookies because these guys (have) got a chance to play," Bouchette said. "In the past, especially on defense, where they were just stacked with talent, No. 1 defense, this, that, and the other thing, they'd draft a rookie like LaMarr Woodley and he couldn't crack the starting lineup."
Bouchette said that Lawrence Timmons will be making the defensive calls on defense, not Ryan Shazier. That will give Shazier the ability to focus on making plays.
"Shazier will have the kind of freedom, I think, that Kendrell Bell had back in '01, when he was NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year," Bouchette said. "With his speed and everything, I think they feel that if he does make some mistakes, that speed can help make up for it."
