Police: Man Shoots, Kills Friend During House Party

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A man was shot and killed by a friend at a party inside a Penn Hills home.

Police say the shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. Thursday morning at a home on Springwood Drive.

According to police six people were at the house when the shooting happened.

Police say 21-year-old Damien Franklin was playing with a rifle at the home he shares with his girlfriend and his family when it accidentally shot and killed his friend 18-year-old Nathan Hurrell.

Franklin told police the group was "drinking beers and playing around with his drones" when their attention turned to four guns that were sitting on the patio.

Franklin says Hurrell picked up a shotgun, then an assault rifle saying "boy, what would you do if someone had a strap pointed at your face." Franklin himself was holding a rifle at his side. He told police he picked it up to see if it was loaded and it went off, striking his friend.

Franklin told KDKA's Trina Orlando that it was an accident, and he "just wants to say sorry to Nathan's family."

Police say Franklin will be charged with homicide for the accidental shooting.

Franklin owns four guns.

He told county detectives that three of the guns were stolen in a burglary two years ago and were returned to him by police just hours before the fatal shooting.
