Colin Dunlap Reports Relationship Between Pedro Alvarez And Pirates Is "Tenuous"

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - While Pedro Alvarez continues to deal with a foot injury, in his own opinion, he's ready to play, but the Pirates seem to have a different opinion than him and that's leading to a "tenuous" relationship between the two.

"I started hearing some rumblings last night and heard it again this morning," 93-7 The Fan's Colin Dunlap says.  "He feels as if he could be back out there and the club doesn't feel the same way."

Dunlap describes the relationship as "tenuous," and elaborated on who those feelings are directed at.

"Not the Manager [Clint Hurdle], I've been told it's the front office."

The team has issued the following release on Pedro's current medical condition.

"Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Pedro Alvarez has been diagnosed with a stress reaction in the 4th metatarsal in his left foot. The typical recovery time for this type of injury is 4-6 weeks."

Dunlap also talked with Starkey and Mueller about the defensive play of Andrew McCutchen and his positioning in the outfield.

"It's not a guess, I know Andrew McCutchen is able to have power to position himself shallow or deep, and he prefers to play deep.  Not they position him right and left," Dunlap said.  "He actually went to them in the offseason and said I position myself deep, that's where I'm going to play, it's not going to change.  This was told to me by another player, that's how it is.  He has unilateral to position himself that deep.  It's obviously not working out and it needs to be changed I think.  It's the only flaw for that guy, everything else he's incredible, but it has become an issue and the Pirates aren't changing it any time soon.  He's just not comfortable going back on a ball is what he's told them, and they're not looking to change it for some reason."
