Firefighter/EMT Responds To Fire At Own Home In Jeannette

JEANNETTE (KDKA) - An emergency hit especially close to home for a Jeannette firefighter and EMT.

He was out on the job, when a call came through at his home address.

it was just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when fire erupted at this home in the 500-block of Scott Avenue in Jeannette.

When crews arrived, thick smoke and flames were racing up one side of the house.

They immediately blocked off the roadway and jumped into action.

"Our guys went inside and made a quick attack, knocked the fire down in the bedroom and went into the attic for some extension. So, there is minor damage on the interior, but most of the damage is on the exterior," Jeannette Fire Chief Joe Matijevic said.

Dozens of firefighters responded, including the owner of the house - Jeannette firefighter and EMT Scott Cline.

He was at work, filling up an ambulance with gas, when he heard the call come over the radio.

Panic set in and he rushed home, knowing his wife and two kids were there.

"The wife and kids were home at the time. The neighbor knocked on their door and woke them up, so they got out in plenty of time. So, there were no injuries, also no injuries to the firefighters as well," Chief Matijevic said.

The fire chief said Cline was in shock at first.

The family lost some belongings and will be forced to stay with family.

They are hoping to be back home by the holidays.

As for the fire itself, the chief says it sparked outside of the home.

A state police fire marshal was called in to investigate the cause.

Crews will be back at the scene today, continuing to look for clues.
