Police Looking For Stolen McKeesport WWI Memorial Plaque

MCKEESPORT (KDKA) - Police are trying to track down a stolen bronze plaque that was part of a veteran's memorial.

Driving through McKeesport, everything appears to be normal. The flags are there and so are the veterans' medallions.

The carved marble honoring the men and women from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard still shines. But, there is a gaping hole.

"A couple nights ago, somebody took the plaque of the names of the World War I veterans," Dale Robinson of the Tenth Ward Memorial Committee said. "It's pretty heavy, it was a large piece. They had to work at it. There's marks shown on the concrete over there as to where they used the pry bar or something to dislodge it."

Every junkyard in the area has been notified. McKeesport Police said if you call them, they'll come pick it up and return it -- no questions asked.

But, for the people who maintain the monument, there's still that empty spot.

"Completely uncalled for. I'd rather give them the money if that's what they wanted. I think I would have given them the money rather than what they did," Robinson said.

Police said their no-questions-asked offer has fallen on deaf ears, but Robinson is hopeful another local company may provide a lead.

"There was a 30-foot flagpole stolen from R&W. The owner of R&W contacted me and told me about it and hopefully we'll be able to get some video off of that. Perhaps it was done at the same time. They had to cut a hole in the fence to get the flagpole," Robinsons said.
