Big Water Main Break In Munhall Leaves Wet, Icy Mess

MUNHALL (KDKA) -- This morning, Pennsylvania American Water Company workers were looking into a water main break in Munhall.

Around 4:30 a.m. on Friday, water started coming up from the ground along Homestead Duquesne Road at Calvert Drive.

The water was flowing out of the ground and down the street for more than an hour, leaving some yards and driveways covered in water. It also created some icy conditions.

Officials say the break caused ice to form over a stretch of Homestead Duquesne Road.

PAWC workers were able to get the water turned off just before 6 a.m. They are investigating the break and figuring out how to fix it.

"The break is causing some substantial ice build up, we have company salt trucks salting the road, we're asking driver to use an abundance of caution right now until the roads are thoroughly treated," said Gary Lobaugh, External Affairs Manager with Pennsylvania American Water Company.

No roads were closed, but the break caused hazardous conditions for drivers.

Around 12 customers lost water, but PAWC says the 50- to 60-year-old main would be replaced Friday. But the main issue was the huge amount of water.

"He says, 'Helen, did you always want that ice skating rink in your front yard?'" said Helen Danko.

Danko says they were fortunate not to have any damage in their home, but their driveway, along with other, may have damage from water getting under the pavement.
