Hays' Eagles Chase Off Wayward Squirrel

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The bald eagles in Pittsburgh's Hays neighborhood are keeping busy as they prepare to hatch new eaglets this spring.

The pair has been spotted in recent weeks keeping house, moving around twigs and branches and flying in and out of their nest.

But early Saturday morning, they had an unwelcome visitor show up.

A gray squirrel accidentally climbed into the nest.

Soon after, one of the eagles swooped in, scaring the squirrel and chasing it away.

Hopes are high for new eggs to appear in the nest as early as February.

They produced an eaglet two years ago and three healthy eaglets last year.

"It's looking real good that we're going to have another successful year," said Gary Fujak, of the Pennsylvania Game Commission, last month.

And this year, the Eagle Cam will have even more coverage. The Audubon Society and PixController mounted not one but two web cameras to cover all the angles. Read more about the Hays eagles here.
