Suspect Sought In Harmar Township Carjacking

INDIANA TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – The search for a man who carjacked a woman out with her two children in Harmar Township on Tuesday continues.

Police say the mother and her kids were outside the FunFest Entertainment Center on Freeport Road when it happened. Police say a woman was there to go bowling with a friend.

KDKA's David Highfield Reports:

"It's still going through my mind how bad it could have been," said Joe Krist, the carjacking victim's husband.

He says his wife had just pulled into the Fun Fest parking lot in Harmar with their 3-year-old son, Brando, and his 7-month-old sister in the backseat. That's when a carjacker armed with a knife opened the door of their SUV and demanded the keys.

"She seen the knife. She immediately gave him the keys, purse, whatever," but he says she began pleading with the thief. "'Please let me get my kids! Please let me get my kids! I don't care about anything else.'"

He allowed her to get them out and then took off. Drivers reported seeing the carjacker driving erratically in the silver Kia Sorento.

Police say he crashed into a guardrail and then crashed into a utility pole, which he knocked over in Indiana Township.

That's when he abandoned the vehicle he had stolen and took off on foot.

Police searched by air as well as on the ground. They even brought in a canine to try to find the suspect, but no luck.

Allegheny County Police and multiple local police agencies stood by on the ground assisting Harmar Township Police in the search, which covered around a three mile radius in two townships.

Police spent a lot of time searching for the suspect near Barnhart Street in Indiana Township. That is the last place police say the man was seen when he took off on foot.

KDKA's Amy Wadas Reports:

At one point, police had a K9 searching for the man, but nothing turned up.

The Kia Sorento was towed from the scene.

The mother and her two kids were shaken up a bit, but police say they're doing okay.

Police wrapped up the search for the day. They say they are reviewing surveillance video.

The suspect is described as a tall white man in his early- to mid-30s. Police say he wore glasses and a beanie cap at the time of the carjacking.

If you've seen him anywhere, you're being asked to call police.
