Fire Rips Through East Hills Home, Woman Rescued
EAST HILLS (KDKA) - Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire Wednesday morning in the East Hills.
The two-alarm fire started around 2:55 a.m. at a home in the 8300-block of Rolfe Street, near Wilkinsburg Avenue.
When crews arrived on scene, they were told a woman, who was bedridden, was trapped inside the home. They were told she used oxygen tanks, but firefighters say those tanks did not explode.
Firefighters found Carla Bey unconscious in the rear of the home, near the kitchen. She was taken to West Penn Hospital for serious burns to her throat. She was last listed in critical condition and is on a ventilator.
"When we first responded to this fire, there was fire showing on the first and second floor. The first arriving company was able to get a woman hat was lying unconscious on the kitchen floor rear, out of the building. It's not common to find someone conscious in conditions like that," Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire Deputy Chief Harry Scherer said.
One firefighter was taken to UPMC Mercy for treatment. Officials say he experienced chest pains at the scene of the fire.
The family is not able to live at the home any longer.
