A Look At The Pittsburgh Marathon, By The Numbers

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Thousands of marathoners will pound the Pittsburgh pavement Sunday, accepting water from a half million biodegradable cups.

Wednesday morning, hospitality tents rise near the finish line in Point State Park.

"There will probably be 15 or 20 tents out here," says Dick's Pittsburgh Marathon CEO Patrice Matamoros. "We have over 4,000 volunteers this year. We'll have 40,000, just over 40,000 runners for the whole weekend."

U-Haul on Liberty Avenue will donate use of 35 U-Box portable storage units, filled with first aid supplies and other necessities. And in their warehouse, marathon organizers have stored 6,000 goody bags filled with stuff. And that's just for the kids' marathon on Saturday.

"We have over 120 schools participating on Saturday, our largest ever," Matamoros says. "It'll be about 6,000 kids coming in."

They have 40,000 nutrition bars. That's one for each runner, as long as no one takes two.

There are six pallets of fruit cups, 15 pallets of potato chips, and 91 pallets of gallon water jugs.

"We will also have 22,000 gallons of Gatorade," says the Marathon CEO. "We will have over 25,000 bananas, cut in half, so they'll make 50,000 bananas."

A total of 25 U-Haul trucks will deliver it all. Meanwhile, at the Convention Center, more than 150 vendors are setting up for this year's Expo.

Matamoros mentions one more important addition.

"We have 700 Porta Potties coming in," she says.

Which brings us back around to those half million cups of water.
