2 Former Steelers Honor Volunteers Helping Homeless

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - While many Pittsburgh Steelers fans are caught up in the NFL Draft this weekend, two former standouts continue to help their adopted hometown.

Former Steelers Tunch Ilkin and Craig Wolfley had a busy day Friday.

They started early on a 20-mile walk all around Pittsburgh to raise awareness for their big charity fundraiser next week as they raise money for the Light of Life Mission on the North Side.

"I just love, I love Light of Life. I have been hanging out there since 1987. The work that they do is, it is really humbling to see lives changed," Ilkin said.

They paused for a few minutes at Market Square to hand out the 2015 Locker Room Leadership Awards to people who volunteer at the mission.

"They've got some staff down there that reach out to the people, to share Jesus, change lives, restore lives, get people put back on their feet, but it is all about the volunteers also that give of their lives. They pour their lives into other people," Wolfley said.

One of this year's winners is only 10-years-old.

"I felt really bad that people lived under bridges and they didn't have homes, so I just started fundraising," Aimee Keeley said.

Her efforts raised more than $1,400 for the mission -- enough to nearly make big tough-guy football players cry.

"It makes you all verclempt on the inside that a little one would understand at such an early age that to serve and have an attitude of servitude is really one of the most gracious things you can do in life. That's what it is all about," Wolfley said.

Kimberly Heller was also recognized along with Tom McGough for countless hours of service to the mission's work.

"I thought it was pretty amazing the first time I went. I had never seen a place that beautiful before," Keeley said.

"It's like the old saying that, 'If God is moving somewhere, then I want to be there.' They have been doing this for 63 years. How cool is that?" Ilkin said.

Their annual Walk for the Homeless event will take place next Saturday. For more information, click here.
