Firefighters Rescue Several Residents From Wilkins. Twp. Fire

WILKINS TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – Firefighters worked to rescue and evacuate residents of an apartment building in Wilkins Township Saturday night.

According to officials at the scene, the fire started at the Brentmoor and Penn Center apartment complex on Penn Circle shortly after 9 p.m.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, there was heavy smoke and fire on the fourth and fifth floors of the building.

Fire officials said it took about 10 minutes to bring the fire on the fourth floor under control.

Initial crews on the scene helped to evacuate residents and rescue others from balconies.

The failure of a power cord on a small appliance in one of the bedrooms was the cause of the fire. A 90-year-old woman was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital with smoke inhalation.

Residents of the building were evacuated to the Wilkins Township Municipal Building for shelter.

Damage to the building was estimated to be about $1 million.
