Flood Waters Leave Woman, Son Trapped In New Wilmington

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Firefighters rescued a woman and her 5-year-old son after they were trapped by flood waters early this morning.

It happened on Cottage Drive near New Wilmington.

The Little Neshannock Creek rose rapidly, cutting off access to the family's home on the other side of the creek.

Emergency crews first tried to use a boat, but decided it would be easier and safer to bring the mother and son up a hillside between their home.

"We were actually able to walk out the back trail," said Stephanie Leslie who was rescued. "I thought it was flooded, but it turns out it wasn't, so we were able to get out through the back tracks behind the house."

Firefighters also rescued the family's two dogs.

The heavy rains overnight left some roads under water.

Streets Run Road at Painters Run in Baldwin was flooded.

Crews had to close it until the flood waters recede and they can clear the mud and debris left behind.

And the flooding didn't stop there. Depot Street in Youngwood, Westmoreland County was also flooded.

At least one car got stuck in the water.

Route 119 was also closed between Youngwood and South Greensburg, but has since reopened.
