Stray Bullet Hits Woman Inside Of Kennywood Park

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A woman was shot in the chest inside Kennywood Park Saturday night.

Police say the 26-year-old woman was still inside the park, but was shot from outside. Police were very clear the shooting did not happen inside the park itself.

"There are no indications there was a gunshot within the park itself," a statement from the county said. "None of the witnesses reported hearing or seeing a gunshot and, as of this time, there is no video showing any gunfire."

The woman was shot in the chest, near the shoulder and taken to the hospital. She is currently in stable condition.

"She was wounded by a stray bullet that was discharged outside the park by, unfortunately, a reckless individual who really didn't care about the ramifications of his or her actions," said Christopher Salerno with Kennywood.

After the shooting, police rushed to the scene and Kennywood was put on a lockdown for a period of time.

It's unclear who the shooter was, it was first believed it could have been a drive-by shooting.

Police say they are also considering the possibility the gunfire came from a nearby Fourth of July celebration.

It's not believed the woman was targeted.

KDKA talked to some people at the park Sunday. Those we encountered didn't seem deterred by the shooting.

"Anything can happen at any time, so you have to stay vigilant and keep your family safe and keep your eyes open," said Laurie Regret.

"We're not going to let an incident like that slow us down and keep us from having fun," added Bob Kuenzel. "We feel very safe here and it's going to be a great day."

Allegheny County Police are continuing to investigate.
