New Cleansing Conditioners Offer Salon Experience At Home

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Having your hair washed at the salon is luxurious.

But washing your hair at home is a daily grind.

Now, cleansing conditioner, or co-washing, could cut down how often you have to wash your new hair and make it easier to style.

Andrea Husaroba says it's made her life easier and her hair healthier.

"I started to do that for about a year and I saw a tremendous difference," she said.
Izzazu Salon owners Emilio and Gino explain what it is.

"A cleansing conditioner used in co-washing way is used to help moisture balance in the hair," said Emilio Cornacchione.

While many shampoos strip the hair, cleansing conditioner gently cleans and conditions all in one step.

First, you have to know what type of hair you have.

"Most of the time co-washing works well with textured hair," said Gino Chido.

Curly, wavy, frizzy hair can be controlled co-washing and it also helps highlighted hair not to fade.

But how do you use it?

It depends on your hair type.

Andrea's found she doesn't have to wash her hair nearly as much when she co-washes it.

"I can go like every three days and if I do normal shampoo and conditioner, I have to go every two days," she said.

Co-washing won't remove all the oils, hair products and dirt, so Andrea still shampoos every fourth time she washes.

Izzazu makes four types of cleansing conditioners for different hair types. And there are dozens of brands, like Pantene color-preserving cleansing conditioner for $4.79 at Walmart, or Shea-Moisture coconut and hibiscus co-wash conditioning cleanser for $11,99 at Target, or Wen cucumber aloe cleansing conditioner for $25 at Sephora.
