"Plex Ball" Lets Players Bowl Each Other Over In Plastic Globes

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Iceoplex complex at Southpointe is best known for hockey, though soccer and basketball are also played there. But those sports are nothing like a brand new game called "plex ball."

"Players" squeeze into bulging blobs of oversized bubble wrap, then proceed to bounce off each other. It's a game that'll bowl you right over. Yet the gladiators in plastic globes bounce right back for more.

"You can do anything you thought was too scary beforehand that you can think of," says marketing director Mandi Pryor. "People are very enthusiastic. They think it's the craziest thing they've ever done."

With 12 plex balls on hand, the sports complex is trying out different days and nights each week to gauge public interest. It's proven popular for parties.

"People are coming in the doors like crazy, trying to get in, trying to battle their friends, and saying they're going to take each other out," Mandi Pryor says. "Having fun. And it's been great."

Encased in a 4-foot plastic bubble gives gymnasts an element of safety - if they can accept a certain lack of elegance.

"The girls are going more into gymnastics and doing flips and stuff, while the guys while the guys are out there for, like, football," the marketing manager says. "They're going to crash into each other as much as they can."
