Brookline Woman Shot & Killed, Search Continues For Shooter

BROOKLINE (KDKA) – Police are investigating a shooting that left one woman dead in Brookline early Sunday morning.

According to police, the shooting happened in the 900-block of Fordham Avenue around 6 a.m.

When emergency officials arrived at the scene, they found a 25-year-old woman on the ground near a pool.

"It turns out this was a fatal gunshot to the head. All we can say is our officers are investigating. We have spoken to several people who were home at the time," Pittsburgh Police Public Information Officer Sonya Toler said.

The victim has been identified as Maria Bruno.

Her family is devastated by the loss and are trying to understand why it happened.

"Maria was the most beautiful girl in the world. Her beauty came from the inside. She was the first person that would be there for her family or her friends if they needed anything, no matter what time of day," Thomas Pisano said.

It's believed she may have been with her boyfriend at the time. Police aren't saying much about the investigation and so far, no one has been arrested.

However, the family is confident the crime will be solved quickly.

"I'm sure they will, they're on the job now and I'm sure they will," Pisano said.

What makes the shooting so hard to accept is this is the second major tragedy to hit the family.

"Her mother lost her son five years and three days ago," Pisano said. "Her mother is the exact same as Maria, never a negative word, never anything. No matter how life treated her when her son went, she was positive. This life that has been taken from us will never be replaced."

Friends will be hosting a Pop Punk Night benefit at The Smiling Moose on the South Side.

"Nothing is going to ease the suffering that her friends and family are going through right now, but maybe a little bit of financial help will help them get through this week and these next few months," Adam Rahuba said.

Rahuba says he has a goal of raising $2,500 Saturday night. That's going to be done via donations and a 50/50 raffle since it's free to get in the doors.
