State Police Issue Warning About Bogus $50 Bills Being Passed Around In Pa.

GREENSBURG (KDKA) -- State police have issued a warning after bogus $50 bills were found in Pennsylvania.

Investigators are looking for people passing the fake $50 bills in and around the area, including in Greensburg.

But it's not just happening in Pennsylvania, one bill appears to have made trips to three states.

"It's faded, it's a little bit washed, which is the tendency for most counterfeit items. It's also missing some of the key factors," said Trooper Steve Limani, of Pennsylvania State Police.

Those factors include a water mark and a metal strip. State police got a hold of one of the counterfeit bills after it was passed at a Pizza Hut in East Huntington Township.

The person accused of using the fake money was caught on surveillance video in the restaurant. But that suspect is not the only one accused of using the counterfeit bills.

"That location had other individuals try and pass a $50 bill," said Trooper Limani. "After contacting the Secret Service we were advised that that particular counterfeit bill with those serial numbers has been used in a multitude of state."

State police say the counterfeit $50s with matching serial numbers have turned up in these places in Pennsylvania:

  • Mechanicsburg
  • North Huntingdon
  • Washington
  • Waynesburg
  • Monroeville
  • Pittsburgh
  • Butler
  • North Versailles

They have also turned up in places in West Virginia and Maryland.

Businesses are warned to keep an eye out for bogus bills, and if you recognize any of the suspects, you are urged to give law enforcement a call.
