Monroeville Animal Hospital Treats 3 Dogs For Copperhead Bites

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A warning for pet owners: This is the time of year when dogs can be bitten by copperheads.

Avets in Monroeville has seen three dogs recently bitten by venomous snakes, at least two of which were copperheads.

Veterinarian Dr. Megan Kaplan says this is the time of year when dogs are out, but so are snakes.

Fortunately, she says most bites to dogs are not fatal.

Mark Ludman's dog Buster was bitten by a copperhead in his backyard in Robinson Township. He rushed the dog to the vets to get anti-venom.

He also killed the snake and brought it to the vets, so they knew what type of snake it was for sure.

Ludman says Buster was in a lot of pain but is doing well now.

Dr. Kaplan says to be very careful even when a snake is dead. She says they can still bite you because they have muscle contractions when people try to pick them up.

Copperheads live in the southern two-thirds of Pennsylvania.
