Steelers Training Camp Practice Report: Golden Suffers Injury

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - It had been a nice training camp, and a good day for back-up safety and special teams captain Robert Golden until what would have been his second-to-last play of day.

Golden went down with a leg injury that coach Mike Tomlin termed "significant" as evidenced by Golden's reaction. He screamed while writhing in a great deal of pain, and then he was carted off.

With Shamarko Thomas still sidelined, Golden had been getting all the first team reps and had made several plays today. First-year safety Alden Darby – who blew up Dri Archer in the red zone drills today – is next in line until Thomas can get on the field.

Otherwise, Archer made a few plays, hooking up with Ben Roethlisberger on a couple of checkdowns and was usually matched up against Ryan Shazier in RB/TE-LB passing drills which played to a draw.

Same for Le'Veon Bell and Lawrence Timmons, but one play Roethlisberger zipped a ball through Timmons' good coverage that somehow Bell still caught.

"That's OK Lawrence," Tomlin said. "He's pretty good."

Tight end Jesse James had two drops during that same practice period, but is still having a nice camp.

The first team offense beat the first team defense in the final seconds of the 2-minute drill when Roethlisberger hit Antonio Brown on a 4th down throw.

With other WRs out, Darius Heyward-Bay and Cal U's CJ Goodwin were Roethlisberger's other receivers. Roethlisberger also showed much more imagination than Peyton Manning's "Omaha" by hollering "Doritos," "Fritos," "Jaguar," and at one point, "Black Siberia" while calling plays at the line.
