15-Year-Old Killed, 2 Others Hurt In Knoxville Shooting
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A teenager is dead and two other people were injured in a shooting late Thursday in city's Knoxville section.
According to Pittsburgh Police, multiple shots were fired in the 500-block of Brownsville Road around 10:30 p.m.
Police say 15-year-old Curtis Pounds of Beltzhoover was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other men, a 43-year-old, and another 15-year-old were both grazed by bullets and taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital in stable condition.
"We believe they were together," said Pittsburgh Police spokeswoman Sonya Toler. "There were possibly others on the sidewalk as well, but of course when shots are fired, people don't stick around."
Police say bullets also struck two parked cars and a business along Brownsville Road.
They are searching for a car that may have been involved in the shooting.
"There was a black sedan seen speeding away from the scene," said Toler. "I wouldn't quite characterize this as a drive-by, we're still trying to determine what happened."
So far, no arrests have been made.
" It's insane and it's unnecessary. It's unnecessary violence and something should be done," said Say Mays, a Mount Oliver resident.
Pittsburgh Public Schools released the following statement about Curtis' death.
We are deeply saddened to report the tragic loss of Curtis Pounds, a 9th grader and member of the Pittsburgh Carrick school community. The fifteen-year-old was the victim of a shooting incident that took place on Brownsville Road yesterday evening.
Curtis was a new member of the school's football team. Our thoughts are with Curtis' family during this difficult time.
We care a great deal about the health and wellness of all of our students. Our Student Assistance Support team is monitoring the effects of this tragedy. Counselors are at the school to provide support to any student or staff who may need it. A letter is being sent home to families today that shares strategies for supporting their adolescent in coping with this loss.
"I think they need a curfew, everybody off the streets by a certain time, like they did years ago, because they're just too many shootings going on," said Joan Mangan.
