Head-On Crash Leaves 1 Person Dead In Westmoreland County

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP (KDKA)- An Avonmore man was killed in a head-on crash in Westmoreland County.

The crash happened just after 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Police say 45-year-old Charles Gestrich Jr. was driving east on State Route 286 in Washington Township. He crossed the center line into the opposite lane and hit a SUV.

Gestrich was partially ejected from his vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speed is believed to have been a factor in the incident. Gestrich was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The Westmoreland County coroner will not be performing an autopsy. The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, thorax, abdomen and lower extremities.

Washington Township Police are investigating the crash.

The driver of the other vehicle was not seriously hurt.
