Lynn Avenue Bridge In Bethlehem Possibly Moving To Latrobe

LATROBE (KDKA)- The Lynn Avenue Bridge in Bethlehem, PA is historic, sturdy and just may end up in Latrobe.

"It's a bridge they want to move and they're looking for someone to take it, rather than scrap it or whatever. It's an opportunity for us," said Latrobe City Manager Wayne Jones.

The 205-foot, camel back, single span, parker truss bridge has run its course in Bethlehem, but it's just perfect for plans in Latrobe.

"We're looking for a way to connect the other side of town across the Loyalhanna," said Jones. "We need a 200-foot bridge because it's available and it's long enough. PennDOT will help move the bridge and help us set up the bridge."

The idea sounds wonderful. Build a bridge from Latrobe across the Loyalhanna over to that side. It's going to take more than just old steel from Bethlehem. It's going to take money.

"A significant portion is going to come from grant money. The rest would come from donations and things like that," said Jones.

If it works out, the bridge will be placed at Unity Street and connect to the Trial at Legion Kenner Park. Civilians there say they're okay with the second-hand span.

"They always talked about getting from Legion keener to 6-Ward, so I think it would be a good idea," John Naegar, Latrobe-native.

This is just the beginning of the process. Paper work and procedures need worked out. However, for Latrobe's long-term future, progress planners hope its not a bridge too far.
