California University Student Killed In Crash

CALIFORNIA (KDKA) – A California University student was killed in a Washington County crash Monday night.

According to coroner, the accident happened on Route 88 in California.

The victim in a Ford Mustang with three other people when it crashed near the campus.

He has since been identified as 21-year-old Mason Reiff - a junior at the university.

Police say they believe Reiff was a backseat passenger when the car ran into a hillside on the two lane highway and flipped over on its side. It's believed Reiff and a second passenger were ejected through the back window.

All four were taken to Allegheny General Hospital where Reiff was pronounced dead.

Marissa Milbert lives a few doors down from the fraternity house where Reiff was living. She says they've been friends for a long time and it's hard to accept the loss.

"He's my neighbor," she said. "He's been my friend since he's come here and it's just someone you always expect to come into my house and just hang out with and that's never going to happen again."

There's no information available on the three others who were in the vehicle.

University officials released the following statement Tuesday afternoon:

"This is a sad day for our Cal U community as we mourn the death of Mason Reiff, a student in the communication studies program. The University extends heartfelt condolences to Mason's family, friends and classmates."

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
