Efforts Underway In Latrobe To Find Man's Missing Service Dog

LATROBE (KDKA) -- Whether he is lost or was stolen, there's a desperate search underway in Westmoreland County to find a local man's dog.

This dog is more than just a pet though, he's a service dog. The animal has been missing for more than a week, and now strangers are pitching in to help find him.

Dawn Weichler considers herself a real-life pet detective. She's heading the effort to try and find Spotty. He's been missing since Halloween.

"I know the dog is lost, stolen, or missing, it doesn't matter to me, I just want to get him back," said Weichler.

Spotty's owner is a transient man with some mental health concerns who has been living behind the Walmart in Latrobe. He did not want to be interviewed or identified.

Spotty has provided him with something counseling nor intervention has thus far been able to achieve, an element of stability.

"I see spotty as being an emotional therapy dog for his dad," says Weichler. "That dog gave him that sense of security. [The dog] is very important to him."

Fliers are up all over Latrobe asking for help tracking down Spotty.

"I've not received one call on this dog, and that's so unusual," Weichler said.

Weichler thinks the dog probably didn't get far and likely is with someone in the area, but she stresses Spotty isn't a stray and has a very important task, and the dog must be returned.

"Spotty is chipped, he's neutered, he's got all his shots and his dad misses him," she says.

If you've seen Spotty, Weichler is asking you to contact her at 412-628-2840.
