Horses Seized For Neglect In Westmoreland County

DERRY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - Humane officers from the Humane Society of Westmoreland County arrived at a Derry Township farm on Friday to try and save the lives of four horses.

Jan Dillion, of the Humane Society of Westmoreland County, said that the agency had been working with the farm.

"We've been working since August here, and things haven't gotten to the point where it's adequate," Dillion said.

All four horses were lead out and taken to the Second Chance Equine facility in Norvelt.

Officials said the horses were all in poor condition.

"They're pretty bad, they're real thin, this is the first time they've had hay and there's still no water there today," Dillion said.

For one horse, it was too late. The farm owner reportedly admitted one horse died and was still on the property.

Dillion says that the farm owner faces animal cruelty charges, fines and medical costs. She also says its possible they will return to take more animals.
