FDA Issues Sugar Substitute Warning To Pet Owners

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - People food isn't always good for dogs.

Now, the FDA wants you to take extra precaution with the breath mints and chewing gum you may keep in your coat or purse.

The FDA says many contain xylitol - a sugar substitute that can be very poisonous for dogs.

That's because it quickly absorbs in a dog's blood stream, which can lead to the rapid release of insulin from the pancreas.

Symptoms of xylitol poisoning include, a drop in blood sugar, decreased activity, weakness, staggering and seizures.

Xylitol can also be found in cough syrup, chewable vitamins, toothpaste, mouthwash and even some baked goods.
