Woman Accused Of Severely Beating 92-Year-Old Mother

MARIANNA (KDKA) -- Helen Girdish's home sits on the family farm just north of Marianna.

When she had not been seen outside the home for a month, Washington County's Agency on Aging got a call and responded to do a wellness check.

Helen's daughter 64-year-old Barbara Girdish met them at the door but would not allow them in, so the state police were called.

Troopers entered the home and found 92-year-old Helen Girdish in horrible condition.

"They found the victim on a mattress in a bedroom, covered in bruises, scrapes, contusions," said Cpl. Kiprian Yarosh with Pennsylvania State Police.

The windows in the home were covered so Helen Girdish had no sense of time, but she told police at Washington Hospital she had been held captive by her daughter and beaten daily for the last six months.

Her injuries were so extensive she was moved to UPMC Presbyterian with a possible brain injury.

Barbara Girdish told the lead investigator that her mother was hard to handle, and "I would get upset and lose my cool." She is facing charges of aggravated assault, unlawful restraint, simple assault and harassment.

Helen Girdish was unable to speak with troopers who came to the hospital today.
