Crash Shuts Down Route 51 In Jefferson Hills

JEFFERSON HILLS (KDKA) -- The accident happened around 6:30 Sunday evening on busy Route 51, near Coal Valley Road.  A Subaru Forester pulled out of a restaurant parking lot onto Route 51, after stopping at a roadside fireworks stand.

"The  driver of the SUV came out, and the motorcyclist wasn't going fast, he obviously saw the guy coming out, he honked, but the guy in the SUV didn't see him. The motorcyclist couldn't swerve cause the SUV took up the entire road," Abby Parsons told KDKA TV's Ralph Iannotti.

The eyewitness said before police and paramedics arrived on scene, a nurse from nearby Jefferson Hospital did what she could for the injured biker, to try to keep him calm.

"My my mom and I, we were stopping cars; the light just turned green, a nurse came out from behind here, it was bad it was bloody; they didn't want him to move, he was going in and out of consciousness," Parsons explained.

The driver of the SUV was clearly shaken by what took place.  After southbound traffic was shut down completely for a while, one lane was reopened; and then, northbound traffic was detoured, while police investigated.

No charges have been filed.

This crash comes a week after a collision in the same area killed two people.
