Woman Drowns In Backyard Pool In Tarentum

TARENTUM (KDKA) -- Police are investigating after a woman drowned Tuesday afternoon in a pool at a home in Tarentum.

The call to 911 came in late Tuesday afternoon.

A woman was found unresponsive in the above ground pool on East 8th Avenue in Tarentum. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was later identified by authorities as 29-year-old Danielle Meskel. Neighbors believe she was a mother of several young children.

"Basically, we got a call from the neighbors asking what was going on," said Patrick O'Donnell, a neighbor. "There was a bunch of cop cars, EMS, fire and rescue parked on the road and had it blocked off."

Police are releasing few details on the investigation.

Someone called 911 after finding Meskel unresponsive in the water.

Allegheny County Police spent hours taking photos and gathering potential evidence at the home.

Neighbors who know the property owner say the victim didn't live in the home.

"I think they just got it within the last year. From my understanding, they don't even know the person who passed away," said O'Donnell.

Other neighbors say the property owner and victim were acquaintances.

Meanwhile, there were dozens of neighbors in their own backyards and out on the street enjoying the summer afternoon.

"It's unreal, crazy, on my street," said Vickie Labella, another neighbor. "Why? How did it happen? That's what I want to know."

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office is expected to perform an autopsy Wednesday.
