Washington, Pa. Back In World Spotlight With PONY League World Series

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - This weekend, Washington, Pennsylvania will be back in the world spotlight as the 2016 Dick's Sporting Goods PONY League World Series kicks off at the Lew Hays PONY Field.

Chair of the Dick's Sporting Goods PONY League World Series Bob Gregg tells the "KDKA Morning News" that Washington is the birthplace of PONY League.

"PONY League was born in Washington in the early 50s. The World Series started the next year in '52 and it's been here all but 11 years over that 65-year span and it's been here every year since 1984."

Gregg adds kids in Washington started PONY because there wasn't an organized league after Little League and before high school.

Games start at 5:30 p.m. on Friday with local and national teams as well as teams from Mexico, Germany and China.

"We'll have 20 to 25,000 people over the course of the [six-day tournament]," Gregg says.

The championship game will be played on Wednesday evening and you can get tickets at www.plws.org.
