Pittsburgh Police Release Synopsis Of Body Camera Policies

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Pittsburgh Police are now responding to a study that said they were not being transparent about their use of body cameras.

Earlier this week, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights and Upturn released a study scrutinizing the "civil rights safeguards" in policies that govern the use of body cameras at 50 police departments in the United States.

Pittsburgh was one of only three cities where no information on the policies was publicly available.

KDKA-TV reached out to Pittsburgh Police for comment and received a synopsis of their policies.

There are 125 officers who wear body cameras. When it is reasonable and safe to do so, they record the following:

  • Traffic and criminal stops
  • Vehicles and crimes code violations
  • Vehicle pursuits
  • Fatal crash or major crime scenes
  • DUI stops and standardized field sobriety tests
  • Pat downs
  • Asking for consent to execute search warrants
  • Search incident to arrest

Additionally, officers do not use the cameras until they have been trained to do so.

As for the footage, the retention and deletion of it is set within the data management system.
