93.7 The Fan High School Football Preview 2016 Class 4A: West Mifflin

West Mifflin
Big Nine Conference

The Titans are annually a strong team but if they want to return to being a contender for the WPIAL title, they will need to do better against the best teams on their schedule.

Last season, the Titans were 6-4 but had a big opportunity at the end of the season to make a statement going into the playoffs against Thomas Jefferson but fell flat on their face, 35-0.

The next week they entered the playoffs with high hopes of making some noise, but the only noise they made was the sound of their bus starting up by the end of the first half of a 49-7 rout at the hands of Franklin Regional.

That was a tough way to end the season but the good news is the Titans are loaded on the offense this year and should be very good in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

Leading the way is 5-8, 190-pound senior running back Russell Tyree, who rushed 115 times for 801 yards (7 per carry).

Tyree is both quick and fast and he should have a lot of holes to run through as the Titans line is anchored by two all-conference players, senior Dylan Boytos (6-1, 230 pound, G) and 6-2, 260-pound senior offensive tackle Darwin Spencer.

Quarterback Karlyn Garner is gone but the Titans offense should be in good hands with a couple of sophomores battling for the job and senior running back Dorian Johnson is a threat in both the run game and the pass.
