Newborn Baby Found In Gas Station Trash Bin

NORTH BELLE VERNON (KDKA) -- Police in Westmoreland County are investigating after a newborn baby was found in a trash can in the bathroom of a BP gas station.

The gas station in North Belle Vernon is located right off of Interstate 70.

The baby girl remains in the hospital under observation, and no charges have been filed at this point.

Valerie Hamer manages a restaurant across the street. She says the news of the discovery really got to her.

"Devastating, devastating. It's awful," said Hamer. "She could have given that baby up for adoption, or there's so many other ways than to dispose of it in a garbage can."

A police source tells KDKA that the incident happened Saturday just after 1 p.m., and they believe the mother gave birth in the restroom.

Paramedics who were called to treat the mother then discovered the baby, according to police.

The baby appeared uninjured, and Hamer is among the many that are thankful for that.

"Thank goodness it's alive, and hopefully, someone will be able to adopt it. She'll have a wonderful family," she said.

The Westmoreland County District Attorney's Office is reviewing the case.
