Cops: Mom Wanted 12-Year-Old Driver To Be 'Man Of The House'

LATROBE, Pa. (AP/KDKA) - Police say a western Pennsylvania woman was caught teaching her 12-year-old son to drive - while she and four other children were passengers - because she wanted him to be the "man of the house."

Latrobe police charged 33-year-old Carrie Geyer earlier this week after investigating an incident in August when her car was stopped by an officer who saw it driving erratically.

Police say the 12-year-old boy was driving and Geyer was in the front seat with a 5-year-old in her lap. Three other kids, ages 4, 5 and 12 were in back. They were not strapped into safety seats.

A witness driving behind the Geyer reported the strange incident.

"He looked kind of young to be driving," Tamara Madatic said. "Started running off the roadway and into someone's yard."

She followed the car for a while and called the police.

"How could someone do something like that to her children," she said. "There's plenty of other ways he could learn responsibility at the age of 12."

Online court records don't list an attorney for the Seward woman, and a phone listed in her name was disconnected Thursday.

She's being mailed a court summons for five counts each of endangering children and reckless endangerment.
