West Virginia University Student Dies After Fall From Roof

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (KDKA/AP) - West Virginia University officials say a student who fell off a fraternity house roof last weekend has died from his injuries.

Media reports say that 20-year-old Sean Guthrie died Wednesday.

Guthrie fell about 20 feet from the roof of the Kappa Alpha fraternity house on North High Street.

"My son loved being here at WVU," said Daniel Guthrie, Sean's father. "It is a place where he found a sense of belonging. KA is a place where he found a brotherhood that he longed for."

University officials said they believe the fall was an accident and there were no signs of foul play.

West Virginia University Chief of Police Bob Roberts said Guthrie was trying to climb back into a window from the roof after smoking a cigarette and lost his grip while trying to open it.

"The one thing I would like to say to everybody is please be safe," Michelle Guthrie, Sean's mother, said. "Take care of yourselves, when you have parties and please... you have mothers and fathers that love you dearly."

Guthrie, of Toms River, N.J., was a junior majoring in industrial engineering.

Collections for Guthrie's funeral expenses on a GoFundMe page have already exceeded $19,000.
