McCandless Water Main Break Floods Home

MCCANDLESS (KDKA) -- Bursting out of the ground late morning, the pressure from a broken 10-inch water main puts out a pretty impressive flow of a gurgling, muddy mix.

All of it ended up flowing into the front yard of Lisa Papenbrock and Jonathan Kohut, three days after their fourth anniversary.

"As soon as I saw where the break was I thought it's a swimming pool waiting to happen," Kohut said.

But he didn't know how much of that pool was in their home. The basement game room took the worst of it.

"Come in here and just like walking in a sopping mess and seeing like two inches of water, it was bad," Papenbrock said.

The relatively new carpet acted like a sponge, and a pump helped get the standing water out. Some losses are obvious.

"Carpet for sure, we have a few items from our wedding thankfully they were up. We'll see about the electronics that's on the floor back there. We haven't gotten that far yet," they said.

When they did, the realization set in that the water had poured in through the window and drenched everything below without discrimination.

And outside the home, where the water rushed down both sides, their newly-poured gravel driveway did not handle the inundation well.

The crews from west view water used a backhoe to try and smooth it back out, as they prepared to begin the repairs and get this area of McCandless flowing again.
