Police: Man Breaks Into Daycare, Steals Crackers & Juice

ALLENTOWN (KDKA) – A man is facing charges for allegedly breaking into an Allentown daycare in order to steal food.

According to police, the incident happened at the A+ Child Care on East Warrington Avenue.

James Stevenson, 52, of Knoxville is accused of breaking in and taking two, 10-pound bags of fish crackers and a gallon of apple juice. He also allegedly took a three-pack of Lysol.

"We're part of the community. We do a lot in the community every day. This is quite strange to me," said James Thomas, the owner of the daycare center. "We see him walking up and down the street every day."

Surveillance video captured the incident around 2:30 a.m. Monday.

The video shows Stevenson sitting in front of the business. He tried several times to pry the door open. When that didn't work, officials say Stevenson returned with a chunk of concrete and threw it into the glass door.

"What would make you have that urge to cause this much damage for some fishies and candies, juice and Lysol?" said Thomas. "I don't understand it."

Even though Stevenson walked away, things didn't end there.

About four hours later, Thomas says he and his staff were cleaning up broken glass when he noticed the suspect standing across the street, wearing the same clothing from the surveillance video.

"Wow, this guy is really standing across the street like nothing happened. That's when we made the call," said Thomas. "He looked at me and said, 'Hey I know. I said, 'I know you. Why would you do this?'"

Police were able to identify Stevenson from surveillance video and eventually took him into custody.

He is being charged with burglary and is being held in the Allegheny County Jail.
