Large Crowd Honors Veterans At Cemetery Of The Alleghenies

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A color guard honors living veterans, and those who've passed on, at the Cemetery of the Alleghenies. The cemetery is the final resting place for more than 12,000 veterans.

"Veterans' Day is a day set aside to honor all of those who served honorably in our military," Retired Brigadier General Jerry Beck, Jr. told the large crowd. "I'm very surprised by the size of the audience that was here..and it's really great to know they all come out to do this."

Vietnam veteran Stan Kengor says the crowd support is welcome.

"When we came home, there was nothing. Absolutely nothing, other than my mom and dad waiting for me at the airport."

The ceremony paused for a moment of silence for the fallen police officer in nearby Canonsburg, who also gave his life in the line of duty.

92-year-old George Yates, wounded in World War II, treasures the glow of gratitude.

"It makes you feel good. People you don't know, you give them a hug, and you come away and feel better."
