Hearing Postponed Again For Mother Accused Of Feeding Baby Extreme Diet

UNIONTOWN (KDKA) -- The mother accused of endangering the welfare of her baby by feeding him an extreme vegan diet was supposed to have a preliminary hearing Monday.

Elizabeth Hawk's hearing was scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Magisterial District Court in Fayette County.

Relatives told KDKA the 33-year-old fed her baby boy a diet of only nuts and berries that caused him to develop a severe rash from head to toe and also impair his cognitive development.

Hawk's estranged husband, Jerry Hawk, was at the Magistrate Court with their 14-month-old son, Adrian.

They waited patiently during several closed door discussions between the Commonwealth and Hawk's attorney, David Kaiser.

Instead of moving forward with the prosecution, District Attorney Richard Bower requested the case be continued to another date. KDKA's Julie Grant questioned Bower about why he wanted to postpone the case when there were witnesses present and ready to testify.

"There is a question about the doctor being here, so we made arrangements to get the doctors here. I don't want to discuss why I do what I do," said Bower.

When asked when the hearing will occur, Bower told KDKA he had no idea and to ask the court staff. A clerk told KDKA they have not scheduled a new date.

This is the second time the case has been postponed. No word on why the case was postponed the first time.

Hawk is out on bond.
