Officers Deliver Free Thanksgiving Meals To Those In Need

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police is getting involved in creating a happier holiday this Thanksgiving, by participating in the "Get Stuffed With Love" program.

Along with Rotary Clubs of Bethel-St. Clair and Northern Allegheny, and Holy Assumption of St. Mary Orthodox Church, policemen gathered Thursday to bring joy to those in need.

3,200 people reached out asking for help. No questions asked, the program promised that their meal will be there.

Heather Dieckmann heads up the event. It takes two months of organization and intense fundraising to get the $6,000 needed. Like clockwork, the helpers always make it happen.

"We start cooking on Sunday. So it's Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday night and then we're here on Thursday so it's a lot of time away from the families and I'm sure the people receiving the meals greatly appreciate it," Dieckmann said.

More than 70 volunteers helped load police cruisers with the meals.

"It warms my heart. I get into my vehicle at the end of the day. Sometimes I wipe tears and I truly count my blessings. I'm so thankful for everything that I have," said Officer Christine Luffey.

For those on the receiving end, it's an unbelievable blessing.

"If we didn't have these, we wouldn't have no Thanksgiving dinner," one recipient said.
