Report: Judge Denies Officer, Defendant In PFA Case, Use Of Duty Weapon

MT. LEBANON (KDKA) -- A judge this week denied a request from a Mt. Lebanon police corporal's attorney to grant the man access to a firearm during working hours.

According to the Observer-Reporter, the judge cited three recent deaths in which women had sought protection from abuse orders in Washington County Court.

Cpl. James Hughes' estranged wife filed a petition after a Nov. 30 argument at their home in Buffalo Township.

She said that during the confrontation he moved close to her and said he "wanted to take me out in the woods and shoot me in my head."

The woman asked that his guns be seized. Officials confirmed that his collection included 120 weapons.

The officer's attorney asked that he be able to carry one firearm only during his shift as a law enforcement officer and relinquish it to the highest-ranking officer on duty when he was through.

Due to the judge denying the request, Hughes will be forced to take unpaid leave from the police department.
