1 Taken To Hospital, At Least 9 Displaced After Carrick Fire

CARRICK (KDKA) -- One person was taken to the hospital and multiple people were displaced after an apartment fire in Carrick on Saturday morning.

Pittsburgh firefighters went into rescue mode as soon as they arrived on the scene of a fire at an apartment house in the 100-block of The Boulevard in Carrick around 8:30 a.m.

An injured resident was trapped in a rear apartment on the third floor.

"Crews were able to get him down a side entrance. He had severe burns," Pittsburgh Fire Bureau acting battalion chief Dino Abbott said. "Medics did a good job coming and extricating him and taking him to the hospital."

Officials say the man was conscious and is listed in critical condition at UPMC Mercy. Three other residents were taken down ladders from the second floor. They were checked out for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters believe the fire started on the third floor. They not only had to get everyone out safely, they also had to cope with a 15 degree wind chill while fighting the fire.

"[All firefighters are] accounted for and in good condition, just a little cold," Abbott said. "Everything went the way it's supposed to. Usually it doesn't happen like that, but it did."

The apartment house was divided into a number of single units. Saturday night, the residents will have to find somewhere to stay.

"It won't be habitable tonight. The gas is shut off, and there's some water damage inside the structure," Abbott said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and nine residents are being assisted by the American Red Cross with food, clothing and shelter.
