3-Vehicle Crash Closes Section Of Turnpike, 4 Injured

BREEZEWOOD, Pa. (KDKA/AP) - A three-vehicle crash has closed a section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes around 4 a.m. Monday and has closed the turnpike in both directions between the Breezewood and Carlisle exits.

Turnpike officials say the crash involved two tractor-trailers and a minivan. One of the trucks overturned.

Four people were taken to a hospital. Their conditions are not known.

Turnpike spokesman Carl DeFebo tells the "KDKA Morning News" the crash forced them to close 80 miles of toll road and the detour is about 100 miles.

"The incident did occur in the eastbound [lanes], but it knocked out the median barrier and pushed...the barrier into the [westbound] lanes and there is some debris and the incident did involve a pretty big fire as well," says DeFebo.

DeFebo adds they expect the westbound lanes to reopen first and it will be "several hours" until the eastbound lanes reopen.

Eastbound, drivers are exiting at Breezewood and taking I-70 to I-81 in Hagerstown, Maryland and then I-81 North back to Carlisle.
