No More Registration Stickers For Pa. Drivers, New License Plate Coming

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The days of attaching registration stickers to the corner of your Pennsylvania license plate are numbered.

PennDot says the last sticker will be issued Dec. 30 as a result of a transportation funding law passed three years ago.

Starting Dec. 31, you will no longer need to display a sticker on your license plate. PennDot says the move will save more than $3 million a year.

The need for the stickers is no longer necessary because law enforcement agencies have electronic access to PennDot's database showing them vehicle registration and auto insurance.

Drivers who have an expired sticker, or stack of expired stickers on their license plates don't have to do anything, they should just leave them there.

The move is just one of several changes being made starting next year.

PennLive reports that Pennsylvania is also coming out with a new license plate next year. The state says by the middle of 2017 the supply of current plates will run out.

The new license plates look similar but the indentations where registration stickers were placed have been removed and they include an outline of the state of Pennsylvania on them.

Another option coming in 2017: The option of renewing your vehicle registration for two years instead of just one. PennDot says the one-year option will remain however.

PennDot also says you can start registering your vehicle online and print out a permanent registration card in 2017.
