PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Memorial Day marks the unofficial start to the summer; so for many people, it has become synonymous with picnics and parties; but the holiday obviously means much more than that as we pause to pay tribute to our service men and women. This Memorial Day weekend, a number of communities across the region will honor our vets with parades, ceremonies and religious services. Here is a small sampling of what’s taking place around the area.

BEAVER
Event: Beaver Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony
Location: Beaver Business District, parade starting Third and Beaver Streets.
Date: Monday, May 30, 2011
Time: 10:30 am
Cost: Free
Description: Parade including veterans, Beaver Area High School Band, members of the World War II Tuskegee Airmen, and re-enactor groups. Proceeds along Third St. to Beaver Cemetery, concluding with a formal ceremony honoring military veterans. Sponsored by Beaver Area Heritage Foundation

BETHEL PARK
Event: Bethel Park Memorial Day Ceremony and Parade
Location: Bethel Park Municipal Building, Veterans Memorial

Description: Memorial Ceremony begins the day, followed by a parade led by the American Legion, with a ceremony at Bethel Presbyterian Cemetery.

Description: Annual parade includes a car cruise, and features veterans groups; military vehicles; Pittsburgh police, fire, and paramedics Shriners; Boy Scouts; Horse Color Guard, Little League organizations, Classic Cars, and more. Parade lasts about one hour, afterwards a wreath laying ceremony at Allegheny Cemetery.

Event: USS Requin Memorial Service
