Casey Sadler’s strong start to spring training ended when the Minnesota Twins got to him for four runs and five hits in 2 1-3 innings Friday in an 8-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
After just one shaky relief appearance Monday night against the Detroit Tigers in which he pitched just two-thirds of an inning while giving up three hits and two earned runs, the Pirates have optioned reliever Casey Sadler back to Triple-A Indianapolis and have recalled pitcher Brandon Cumpton.
After much debate over what the Pirates should do with their growing number of injured players on the active roster, the team has announced that they’ve placed Center Fielder Andrew McCutchen on the 15-day DL with an avulsion fracture involving the costochondral cartilage of the left 11th rib.
With an opening in the rotation still available after the Pirates placed Wandy Rodriguez on the disabled list, the Pirates announced the call-up of starting pitcher Jeff Locke.
In a statement released by the team, it was announced that the Pirates had called up right-handed pitcher Casey Sadler from Triple-A Indianapolis.
