For the first time, we’re hearing from the mother of the suspect in a downtown hostage standoff. Klein Michael Thaxton surrendered after holding a man hostage on the16th floor of Three Gateway Center for more than five hours.
Three Pittsburgh police negotiators are credited with bringing the hostage situation at Gateway Three to an end. They stayed on the line with 22-year-old Klein Thaxton for more than five hours and eventually convinced him to surrender.
Holding a man at knifepoint for five hours is not the Klein Thaxton who Je’Nauba Lipford-Watts went to high school with and dated for several years. “Klein has always been sweet, funny, outgoing, just a regular person,” she told KDKA-TV.
People returned to work at Three Gateway Center Monday morning for the first time since Friday’s hostage situation.
For people coming to work downtown, it began like any other weekday morning. It was Friday and Pittsburghers were anticipating the weekend. But things changed abruptly when numerous law enforcement officials surrounded building three of the Gateway Center plaza in the heart of downtown.
His day started as what’s described as a ¾ house in Beechview, but it ended at the Allegheny County Jail. Klein James Thaxton, 22, is accused of taking a hostage and paralyzing part of Pittsburgh.

Shortly after Klein Michael Thaxton took his hostage, he used his victim’s iPhone and computer to turn to Facebook, posting, “i cant take it no more im done bro — how this ends is up to yall bro.”
